The July 21st meeting will be at John Tuckers' cottage near Saxville at 6:30 p.m.
Directions: The address is N5424 Sunny Hill Road, Saxeville. Directions:
Coming from the East on County A, immediately past the Lutheran Church, turn left on Willow Street, then left again on Portage Road, then right on Sunny Hill and drive down to the river. It is a brown cottage right on the river bank. Willow Street is two streets east of the four way stop at County A and County W, so if you come to the stop sign, you missed Willow.
Coming from the West on A, just proceed two streets past the stop sign at W and turn right on Willow.
Coming from the South on County W, cross the dam and then turn right on the first street, Portage Road. Follow Portage to Sunny Hill and turn right.
If you know where the Ding is, it will be easy for you. Just continue East past the Ding, which is on Portage until you hit Sunny Hill Road.

BIG SPRINGS DAM REMOVAL:
( This is a CWTU success story as reported by CWTU's Tom Poullette. Please read it.)

As most of you remember BIG SPRINGS in Adams County is where Perrier-Nestle tried their next water grab--after the Mecan Springs. They did not win there either. In july of 2004 CWTU President John Gremmer received a message from Bill Petterson of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service asking if C.W.T.U. would like to form a partnership with the Wildlife Service and Adams County to remove a private dam on Big Springs Creek........(Click Here to see the rest of the story.)

President Dick Kraus records water temperature below the dam at Big Springs on August 20, 2004. Read about the CWTU success story above.

June Workday Report:
In June, CWTU had the pleasure of hosting seven young men from Rawhide. They spent three days baling Christmas trees at the Wild Rose Habitat Station. The trees will be used for brush bundles to narrow streams. The boys were able to bale over 700 trees, finishing the stock pile at the Wild Rose Habitat station. CWTU and DNR send a special THANK YOU for their hard work. The young men were - Jesse, Mario, Wes, Garret, Joseph, Darin, and Soue along with Tim Guerin, Earl Schmoll and Nathanial Mellon (staff of Rawhide), and Allen Lane, David Sullivan, and Steve Kornely (DNR). CWTU and the DNR staff are looking forward to another session later this summer with Rawhide. Photos of their activities are available of CWTU’s website.

The June 21 workday on Lawrence Creek was also very productive. Pilings and boards were floated down to the improvement area. The pilings from May’s work day had stringers and decking attached to a 75 ft structure. We were also able to jet in 25 piling for the next structure to be completed. Saturday was about as perfect a day as can be expected in June, and the lunch (prepared by me) was apparently enjoyed by all, since there was very little food left. Many thanks to the participants: Gary Herlache, Linn Beck, Larry Ehrenberg, Steve Riutta, Bob Krueger, Allen Lane, Arnie Lane (Allen’s father), Dakota Lane (Allen’s 7 year old son) and Jon Hoffman. Special kudos to Bob, from Milwaukee.
Jim Humphrey

The next workday will be at Lawrence Creek, on July 19, when the work on pilings, boards and stream narrowing will continue. Please join us – KEEPING OUR COLD WATER STREAMS IN PRIME CONDITION REQUIRES EVERYONE’S HELP.

Ira Giese has concerns about Alaska.
Bristol Bay, Alaska, probably the most salmon rich area in the world is being threatened by a new mining proposal at the headwaters of several of its major streams. This Pebble Mine(shown in red) could destroy huge areas of spawning habitat. To learn what Trout Unlimited is doing, go to www.tu.org/bristolbay.
