August 2004 Fly of the Month

RM Cricket
by Rich Mlodzik

This has been my go-to fly this season when there has not been any surface activity. I started fishing it in April and have fished it all season. The Mustad 9671 is a 2x nymph hook. The extra weight of the hook helps the fly land upright 99% of the time. Clipping the hackle on the bottom lets the fly float in the surface film. The Egg yarn acts as an indicator.

Hook: #14 Mustad 9671
Body: Craft Foam-Black Cut in 1/8" strip
Hackle: Dry Fly-Brown
Wing: Deer Hair-Black
Legs: Small Rubberlegs-Black
Head: Egg yarn-Orange Separate strand into 4 pieces

1) Wrap thread back to bend. Tie in 2"x 1/8" strip of Craft foam, tail cut to a point.
Tie in hackle. Wrap thread over foam all the way to the eye of the hook, then back 1/3 shank length from eye.

2) Palmer hackle forward to thread and tie off. Clip. Stack a sparse clump of deer hair and tie in. Clip and wind thread over butts to hookeye.

3) Tie in rubberlegs on both sides of body.
Wrap thread back to 1/3 point to separate front and hind legs. Fold foam back over body to form head and tie in. Do not pull tight; this will form a round head.
4) 4. Tie in ¼ strand Egg yarn in groove where foam forms head. Take a couple of wraps around the Egg yarn, parachute style. Bring thread under hook to eye and tie off.
Clip excess foam and Egg yarn. Clip hackle flush with bottom of body.
