September 2004 Fly of the Month

Pink Squirrel
by Rich Mlodzik

I learned this fly from John Bethke of Westby. He is the originator of this fly.

For me, it has outfished every other nymph pattern. For John's history and original recipe go to: http://www.couleeregiontu.org/Tips.html

With some minor alterations and my apologies to Mr. Bethke:

I mix 4 parts Fox Squirrel body hair with 1 part orange Antron yarn clipped to ¾" in a coffee grinder. You can also substitute Mink fur which has a little more natural sparkle, but that would be a Pink Mink. I also substitute Shrimp Pink Ice Dubbing, Haretron Pink Dubbing, or Waspi Pearl Chenille for the Thorax. The Pearl Chenille really works well in dark or fast water.

Hook - #14 Mustad 9671
Thread - 6/0 Pink or Black
Head - 1/8" Gold Bead
Rib - Fine Copper Wire
Tail - Pearl Krystal Flash
Abdomen - Fox Squirrel Body Fur mix
Thorax - Medium Pink Chenille

1) Debarb hook and string on bead. Wrap thread to rear of hook. Tie in copper wire. Tie in Krystal Flash and double back to form 2-strand tail

2) Dub rear 2/3 of body with Fox Squirrel mix. Wrap Copper Wire forward for rib. Tie off and clip.

3)Tie in Chenille. Make 1 turn of Chenille and tie off and clip. Whip finish behind bead.
